Oh, the places you’ll go!

Yes, I stole that title from Dr Seuss.  One of the best parts of my job is finding myself in the most interesting places.  For example, there is a golf course that we deliver to called Devil’s Pulpit – just off Highway 10 on the way to Orangeville.  It is so elevated that you can see the Toronto skyline on a clear day.  I’ve also encountered a lot of interesting bars and restaurants.  There are several very small bars that come to mind.  The Little Jerry on College St. in Toronto,  Decoy Bar on Queen West in Toronto, and The Jane Bond in Waterloo come to mind. There is a very quaint restaurant on Hwy. 26 in Collingwood called Waldorf & Statler. It’s owned by two self declared curmudgeons (thus the name – taken from those curmudgeonly men from the Muppets that heckle in the theatre). One owns a local bakery and the other is Collingwood’s noted authority on wine. They are making some delicious food and serving up an exceptional array of wines from all over the world. And it turns out they are not as curmudgeonly as they’d have you believe.   And of course there are the bars with the great views of the skyline.  Three of the best in Toronto are Aera in the newly minted The Well, the bar at Hotel X on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition, and of course Canoe on the 54th floor of the TD Tower.   Recently we have been delivering a lot of wine to a restaurant in Port Stanley called Riva.  I didn’t know Port Stanley existed until about four months ago.  Perched on the shores of Lake Erie, this beach town is only a 30 minutes drive south of London.  It’s a great spot for a weekend away, but I will warn you that I hear it’s incredibly busy come the summertime.  If you’re ever in Thornbury check out Penny’s Motel.  The owners have taken an old rundown motel and turned it into a hip destination.  Lastly, I was in London a few weeks ago delivering to AnnDining and I saw an artisanal ice cream shop next door called buttercreme (Yah, that’s the name.  Apparently the kids don’t care for capital letters anymore).  I went inside and ordered a single scoop (sadly my double scoop days are behind me) and it was the best ice cream cone I’ve had in recent memory.  The highlight was the cone that it came in.  Not a traditional sugar cone.  This was more like a gourmet cookie shaped like a cone.  In a word, delicious.  So take a page from Dr Seuss, and get out there and discover some of these places yourself.  And if you have any unique and interesting spots that you’d like to share with me please leave a comment.

  1. Don’t get me started on the kids these days and their lack of respect for Capital Letters!

Okay okay, guilty as charged. That sounded pretty old of me to say.

  2. Next time you do the Ottawa run check out Thr33’s Co. Snack Bar. Great cocktails, local beers and an interesting selection of small plates to work your way through.

Thanks Anthony. I will definitely stop in next time. Ottawa is such a haven of for dining out, isn’t it? In a previous life I found myself at a venerable Ottawa deli for dinner one night. I believe it was Nate’s. Anyway, who walks in but our PM at the time, The Right Honourable Jean Chretien. And with only one bodyguard! He sat quietly and ate his dinner, and obliged the couple of people that approached him to chat.

      1. Ha. Crazy! I’ve had a few great meals in my visits there, but no brushes with celebrity yet.
